Malcolm K. Haling

Trained in Newcastle as an Industrial Arts teacher with NSW Dept. of Education, I started teaching in 1971. During this time as both Teacher and Head Teacher in schools across NSW, (1980 to 2014, James Sheahan Catholic High, Orange) most of my working life has involved imparting skills to help high school students gain practical knowledge of basics and more advanced construction techniques.

Passing on the skills and appreciation for fine woodworking.

Helping to design and organize efficient workshops and a gradual pleasure in working with wood during these years has been the impetus behind my new venture The Dovetail Joint. It’s a fun place for others to join me where I can pass on the skills and appreciation for fine woodworking with the end result one of great satisfaction.

Married with three ‘grown-up’ sons and living on a small acreage outside Orange in the Central West NSW called for many practical skills. Building, then extending our home as our needs changed, furniture, pool decking and outdoor settings, there was always a list of things to be built. What started as a necessity has grown into a passion.

In more recent years I have traveled to USA (Maine and Philadelphia), NZ, UK to observe and learn from other professionals in the pursuit of broadening my knowledge in specific areas.
